Congrats to Catey! (Best Actress Award of the whole 48 Competition!)

The 48 Hour Competition Award Ceremony was this past weekend. The competition was fierce - the quality of many of the films has really excellent - with lots of great ideas and clever stories.

(A wild aside - there were two teams at the ceremony on Friday who, while they were at the Tampa event, also had people in Orlando picking-up their genres for that competition at the same time!)

"Foos Don't Lie" was recognized in quite a few categories;

We were recognized in the categories of;

Best Use of Required Prop

Best Use of Required Character

Best Use of Special Effects (my face on the Foos Man!)

Best Editing

and

Catey Brannan was selected as winner of the award for "Best Actress" overall for her performance and incredible contributions as Kylie Cooper.

Even better perhaps were the people who came up to me after the showing to share how much they liked "Foos Don't Lie". While we may not have taken the top title this year, the film clearly touched some of our audience quite deeply.

Best of all - as before - the team was great to work with! The fun and excitement of the day and the satisfaction of knowing that we all worked together, and all applied our creativity together to create such an interesting and engaging short film.

Can't wait for the next project,.. and just in case you weren't at the Sarasota screening - I did commit that before the end of next year 2010 - Team JumpCut will have be tackling a project outside of the 48 hour environment. So while I do not know what that means yet,.. keep watching for the "Bat-Signal"! :)

*** "Charlie's Nuts" wins awards.

Word has come back to us that we won again. This time at the local competition. It's a nice winning streak for our Team. Three films made, three films that have won awards. While I am waiting to hear more from Nick Tierce, co-writer of the story, and the writer of our screenplay-he was the Team JumpCut representative to accept the award-he let me know that we were only beaten-out by the cocaine-snorting tube sock in the "Puppet Movie". (The group that went to the screening guessed that this was out stiffest competition.)

So, Charlie's Nuts was well-received and clearly liked by the judges, a very solid Second Place Finish for Best 48 Hour Film. Congratulations to all! And above all - I hope that you are all as proud of this film as I am. Just seeing the clip of Greg above makes me smile.

Here is the email recently sent to me by the 48 Hour Competition (the "Crime's A Cookin'" contest.)

2) Filmapalooza—It's official! We will screen your films as part of the Miami International Film Festival!
Sunny Florida here we come. The Festival runs from March 5-14. We will not know our official screenings dates until mid-November. We will also have information on discounted hotel rooms.

So it's a big surprise, but for some reason the host festival has changed from San Jose to Miami. That certainly makes it an easier road trip! I'll try to get a confirmation that it is not screening at both, and that this is the actual location of the final competition.

Very exciting - seems like we will be able to represent in force!

Director's Notes

I hope you all never get tired of me expressing my gratitude. It takes an incredible team to produce these polished, quality films. When I watch and re-watch our movies-I have them on my iphone, so it is a guilty pleasure! - I always marvel at how so many disparate elements came together so perfectly each time. As many of our team are new to the world of filmmaking, I thought it would be of interest to share a little perspective on just what an incredible accomplishment a 48 hour film is. The average low-budget movie shoots for between 45 to 60 days to make 100 minutes of film. So about two minutes of screen time per day of shooting. Team JumpCut is producing 7 minutes of screen time on one day's shooting. And of course that is without the three - six months of prep time, and the 6 to 12 months spent on editing and finishing. Everyone give yourselves a big pat on the back!

Come and see all the other team's films - it's a great accomplishment to make a movie in 48 hours, and everyone deserves admiration for taking on the challenge.

It will be great to see the film on the huge screen. (I have checked, and the movie will most likely be screened in Standard Def. not in High Definition unfortunately, but it will still be great to see projected in a theatre!)

If you are mentioned in the credits of the film, you should be able to drop in to Digital 3 to get free tickets (I think) but I am not sure how that works. They do not really expect a team to have 20 people on it! I have four extra tickets they provided to me directly, I will bring them to the screening and give them to whomever I see first! See you all on Saturday! :)

Thanks to all who made it to the cast and crew screening. It was great to see all our work the fantastic HD screen at 1350 Main (Thanks to Anand and Andrew). As soon as the film is available online in high resolution, I will let everyone know.

OK, we have a solid screening date and time of "Charlie's Nuts" for our team! There was an unexpected scheduling conflict with the Monday screening, but Paula and Andrew have come to the rescue and secured the room for us at 1350 Main for Tuesday. I hope that everyone who was planning to come Monday will be able to adjust to the new date, and perhaps we will pick-up some of the Team that let me know they couldn't make the Monday screening. Also - thank-you to everyone that let me know the RSVP email wasn't working. My deepest thanks to the incredible members of Team JumpCut. This latest film is again something that I am truly proud of. It's great to see the talents of our crew deliver a film this beautiful and this sweet, and for it to be in such a completely different style and genre from "Crime's a Cookin'" Well done everyone!

I hope that every one of you, all of the extended "Team JumpCut" family, will be able to attend the private screening of "Charlie's Nuts" this Monday from 7-9pm. Please watch for an email confirming the location, but unless something unexpected arrises, we will once again be screening at 1350 Main, courtesy of Anand. ***I will send a confirmation email on the location.***

Especially I want to thank our incredible art, style, and production team; Paula, Lisl, Michael, Christine, Sarah, Beverly, and Liz. As anyone can see from the included picture, the "in-front of the camera" team once again brought the vision into reality. To Paula, our Producer, thanks for everything. Producing puts you behind the scenes, but at the heart of our ability to bring the story to life.

We had great actors; (Thanks Greg, Suzanne, Chris, Nick, Daniel and Chris!) and a wonderful crew (thanks for the loan of the lenses Gene! and to "mini-gene" Zoe, and to Daniel for pulling focus in French and to Dan for holding it high). You all really worked hard to support our newly more complicated (but worth it) camera equipment.

It was a great experience to partner on the story with Nick and Chris and to develop the final screenplay with Nick. Thanks guys!

The generosity of Hotel Indigo, Jim Robison, Joann and Robin, Cat, Kurt, and Andrew Foley were all vital. A special recognition for Thing-Wrangle for loaning us the "other" star of our film, that's Andrew Tanner, the man who tamed "The Thing!" And Jim Prosser for adding his musical stylings and providing our intro theme.

Always my most important thank you goes to Lisl, for making everything I do possible, and for knowing that everything can always be better.

if you cannot make the private screening, there is always the main screening! This will take place at Burns Court Cinemas Lakewood Ranch according to the original competition announcements.

When I have more information about the official screening, I will send it out. The website for the competition shows that the official screening will be October 25th, Saturday. This may also be the announcement of the awards, again-not sure. For me, we have already accomplished everything we set out to do and more, so the official screening is an opportunity to show our respects to the other filmmakers, and to hopefully see our movie on the huge screen at Burns Court Lakewood Ranch.

I hold the ladder hostage for a DVD copy of the Crime's A' Cookin' film. If I do not get it I will use the Ladder in my new sick, twisted & dirty film Crime's a painting.. I would burn it in my fire place but as we all know it only gets cold for two weeks here and there is too much wood.

JUMPCUT: The Sweet, Sweet Taste of Victory!

Team JumpCut cleaned up at the award ceremony! As only a few of us could be there, I wanted write-out the experience of the evening as it happened. Hopefully this will share some of the excitement with everyone who was unable to attend.

BTW - Thanks to Christine for the great pictures, thanks to everyone who made this success possible, and if you don't want to read the whole email just skip to the end for a list of our awards.

So the award ceremony was held this Friday evening, and the results are in. A representation of our crew was able to attend the screening and ceremony.

Myself and Lisl, Paula and Andrew, Chris and Christine, Jen and Brian, as well as Patrick and his wife, Elida.

Of course we approached the evening with a certain bit of Zen. After all, the experience and product certainly exceeded my every expectation but one never knows if the judges are looking for the same things that we were trying to provide. As per my ice cream metaphor from the last email; we already had an overflowing ice cream sunday of delight, but I never expected the judges to pour a whole jar of cherries over our happy occasion!

The awards presentation began with our entire group standing at the very back of the theater on a second floor balcony. After a few drinks and some socializing they announced the first category of the evening, "Best Choreography" - and the winner: "Crime's A Cookin'"!

Chris and I ran from the very back, to the very front of the theater to collect the plaque. I made a short speech, something about how great our crew was :) and then we turned for the long return trip to the balcony. As soon as we arrived, the next category of the competition was announced; "Best Costumes" - and the winner: "Crime's A Cookin'"!

A huge congratulations to our art team - great hair, make-up, costume, props and locations all coming together to create the atmosphere of the film. This time more of us went to collect the plaque and, feeling pretty good about ourselves, we relocated our team to stand on the lower level by the wall.

They announced a number of other awards, with "Crime's A Cookin'" coming up as a finalist in both the "Best Directing" and "Best Editing" categories which was quite an honor even if we did not take the top prize.

And then another win!

Jim Prosser's incredible work on the film was recognized as "Best Musical Score" - with the winner: "Crime's A Cookin'"!

Paula and Chris accepted the award, and Paula gave a wonderful speech about the pleasures of working with a crew as professional as our team of volunteers.

At this point the evening started to get hazy with everything moving too fast to track. They announced that "Crime's A Cookin'" was one of the finalists for the top category, "Best FIlm". Of course this resulted in a lot of screaming, shouting and excitement all around, and while we were still celebrating being in the finals; "Crime's A' Cookin'" was on the screen again-we had won the Audience Award (Group B). This was determined from ballots provided to the entire audience during the screenings at Channelside. Chris accepted the award and spoke about the roller-coaster experience of pulling "Silent Movie" as our genre.

I remember the speech, then us heading back to the wall, and then before we were settled in, hugs and high-fives flying this way and that, we heard;

"And, going on to Filmapalooza in San Jose, to represent Tampa and St. Petersburg in the International-level competition is our Best Film of the 2008 48 Hour Film Project competition; "Crime's A Cookin'"

We had taken the highest honor of the festival!

Congratulations everyone on Team JumpCut! Making this film was an incredible experience because of the team that made it happen. I feel like I was handed an incredible gift. I love that I was able to be a part of this film. That we had this cast and this crew and this genre and made this film-just perfect serendipity. To have our craft and creativity recognized in this manner just leaps the whole experience to another level.

I look forward to working with all of you again. We might even have to make a habit of winning! :)

(Of course that's not what it's about,.. but it sure feels good.)

JUMPCUT: The Envelope Please... - Awards Party This Friday, August 8th 2008

Thanks so much to everyone who attended the screening of "Crime's A' Cookin'" last week. (And a big thanks to Anand for the use of the great screening room!)

It was a happy, exciting and laughter-filled evening, and I couldn't have been more proud of what we have all accomplished Thank you so much for the spirit of professionalism and the passion that each and everyone of you have brought to these projects.

Below you will find the information for the awards program for The 48 Hour Film Project. Lisl and I will certainly be there, as will Jen and Brian Jonas. I will send out the results late that night (after midnight, I'm sure).

As we have learned in the past, we cannot control what the judges take as their priorities, and so just to repeat it - we have already had our victories; from the incredible response at the Public Screening, to the knowledge that we achieved everything we set out to accomplish, and on to the fantastic Screening Party, we've already won three times! So I hope we do get a cherry for the top of our three scoop ice cream cone, but we have already had more victory than we can eat!

And,.. when's the next competition? I can't wait to do it again!
